These are examples of the miners' dinner pails, boots and lanterns. Note the earlier examples of round and oval dinner pails. These held hot water in the bottom to keep the food warm. Miners typically took a pasty for their lunch. A pasty is a meat and potato meal that is baked in a piecrust, shaped something like a turn-over.
